Acute exercise reverses aged-induced impairments in insulin signaling in rodent skeletal muscle

Aging rats were subjected to swimming for two 1.5-h long bouts, separated by a 45min rest period. Sixteen hours after the exercise, the rats were killed and proteins from the insulin signaling pathway were analyzed by immunoblotting.

Yearlong physical activity and sarcopenia in older adults: the Nakanojo Study

We tested the hypothesis that a low level of regular daily physical activity in elderly individuals would be associated with a clinically significant degree of sarcopenia. Subjects were 78 male and 97 female free-living Japanese, aged 65?84 years.

Effects of cardiorespiratory fitness and cerebral blood flow on cognitive outcomes in older women

The mechanisms by which aerobic fitness confers beneficial effects on cognition with aging are unclear but may involve cerebrovascular adaptations. In a cross-sectional study of women from the community (n =42; age range=50?

The effect of mild post-stroke exercise on reactive neurogenesis and recovery of somatosensation in aged rats

Focal stroke was induced in the forelimb area of the sensorimotor cortex in 18-month old male rats using the vasoconstrictor endothelin-1. Beginning 1week after stroke or sham surgery, half of the animals walked 100?300m daily, 5days per week.

Research Article: Correlating heart rate and perceived exertion during aerobic exercise in Alzheimer's disease

Older adults reap many health benefits from aerobic exercise training; however, little is known about how to monitor the training responses in older adults with Alzheimer's disease.

Mild stress facilitates learning and exercise improves retention in aged mice

While chronic or severe stress generally has negative consequences in the brain, moderate stress has been shown to facilitate learning in young animals. It is unknown if stress facilitates or impairs learning in an aged animal.

Insulin sensitization by voluntary exercise in aging rats is mediated through hepatic insulin sensitizing substance (HISS)

Food in the upper gastrointestinal tract potentiates the glucose uptake response to insulin. Meal-induced insulin sensitization (MIS) occurs as a result of insulin-mediated release of hepatic insulin sensitizing substance (HISS) that increases glucose uptake in peripheral tissues.

Cardiovascular fitness after stroke: Role of muscle mass and gait deficit severity

Functional disability after hemiparetic stroke may be compounded by physical deconditioning and muscular wasting, factors related to disuse and advancing age. However, the role of body composition, severity, and chronicity of gait deficits as determinants of exercise fitness after stroke is unknown.

The effect of acute effort on EEG in healthy young and elderly subjects

The effects of physical exercise on mental health have been extensively investigated, mainly in older people. Recent studies have looked into the acute effect of exercise on the brain using standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA).
