Age-related changes during a paradigm of chronic sleep restriction

Fragmented and restricted sleep is a common problem for the human elderly. There is evidence that aging impairs sleep in animals as well. After sleep deprivation, older animals have less sleep rebound.

Age-dependent increase of etheno-DNA-adducts in liver and brain of ROS overproducing OXYS rats

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) play a role in aging and degenerative diseases. To correlate oxidative stress and LPO-derived DNA damage, we determined etheno-DNA-adducts in liver and brain from ROS overproducing OXYS rats in comparison with age-matched Wistar rats.

Compensation aids skilled reaching in aging and in recovery from forelimb motor cortex stroke in the rat

Compensatory movements mediate success in skilled reaching for food after stroke to the forelimb region of motor cortex (MtCx) in the rat. The present study asks whether the neural plasticity that enables compensation after motor stroke is preserved in aging.

Treadmill exercise prevents aging-induced failure of memory through an increase in neurogenesis and suppression of apoptosis in rat hippocampus

ging leads to functional changes in the hippocampus, and consequently induces cognitive deficits, such as failure of memory. Neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus continues throughout life, but steadily declines from early adulthood.
