Human Forearm Muscle Metabolism during Exercise VI. Substrate Utilization in Prolonged Fasting

Five patients undergoing therapeutic starvation were studied after 21-26 days of fasting. Brachial artery blood flow and substrate concentrations in arterial and deep venous blood were determined at rest and during rhythmic forearm exercise.

The role of the exocrine pancreas in the stimulation of insulin secretion by intestinal hormones

The effect of 3-methyl salicylic (0-cresotinic) acid on plasma insulin and glucose tolerance in diabetic and non-diabetic subjects

SummaryOral administration of 3-methyl salicylic acid (3MS) to diabetic and non-diabetic patients in modest doses (0.9–1.8 g/day) over several months produced a significant increase in plasma insulin levels, one hour after a glucose load.

Fatty Acid Patterns Determined Simultaneously in Human Adipose Tissue, Liver, and Plasma during Starvation

The changes in fatty acid composition during fat transport from adipose tissue to plasma FFA, liver TG, and plasma TG were investigated in human beings after starvation for 1 to 7 weeks. The differences found were smaller than those reported earlier after a short period of fasting.

Effect of Isoproterenol, Glucagon and Calcium on Myocardial Oxygen Consumption in Intact Dogs. A Comparative Study

Twelve dogs were subjected to a similar increase in maximal rate of rise of left ventricular pressure (dP/dt) by isoproterenol, glucagon, or calcium. Augmentation of myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) was less with glucagon (p<0.025) or calcium (p<0.01) than with isoproterenol.
