With nitrate ions the polarons of water radiolysis undergo reaction to an intermediate of the tetravalent state of nitrogen. In presence of OH scavengers (ethanol, J-) nitrite is formed by a consequent reaction. The release of CO2 from fresh soil at medium moisture was examined for 14 days after the application of gamma-radiation over the range 0.025 - 10 Mrad.
